Paul Maximilien Landowski was a French sculptor of Polish descent whose career was built on large public and monumental commissions in the first half of the twentieth century. Trained at the Beaux-Arts and awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1900, he rose to early prominence with works shown at the Salon des artistes français and with sculptures acquired by the state, such as the group Fils de Caïn, now in the Tuileries Gardens. After the First World War, in which he served and received the Croix de Guerre, Landowski established his reputation as a creator of memorials and large-scale works: he executed dozens of monuments to the war dead, urban sculptures in Paris and abroad, and emblematic pieces such as the Sun Yat-sen mausoleum in Nanjing and the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. Alongside official commissions, he spent decades on the ambitious “Temple de l’Homme” project, a monumental complex conceived as a space for reflection and humanist synthesis that remained unfinished for lack of funding. His output, characterized by monumentality and humanist concerns, secured him high renown among interwar generations and a legacy held in public collections and in the museum bearing his name in Boulogne-Billancourt.
