Paul Robeson was a prominent actor, concert bass-baritone, athlete, and American activist whose career crossed artistic and political boundaries. He became a milestone in theater as the first Black actor to play Othello on Broadway, a role he made his own on both British and American stages and that helped open opportunities for subsequent generations of Black actors. In film, his performances—some of them controversial in the United States—defined much of the 1930s and 1940s, particularly in British productions where he was a box-office star. As a singer, Robeson built a distinguished career alongside collaborators such as Lawrence Brown, becoming a seminal interpreter of American folk repertoire and patriotic works like Ballad for Americans. His voice and public presence produced dozens of recordings and memorable performances, including a triumphant return to Carnegie Hall in 1958. At the height of his visibility, Robeson turned his fame into activism against racism and fascism, adopting socialist positions that placed him under U.S. government surveillance during the McCarthy era; his FBI file remains among the most extensive on any artist. In 1952 he received the Lenin Peace Prize. His legacy combines artistic excellence, racial pioneering, and political engagement, influencing culture and the struggle for civil rights.
