Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. was an American officer and aviator, a brigadier general in the United States Air Force, whose name is tied to the most decisive operational act of his career: he commanded the B-29 Enola Gay that dropped the atomic bomb “Little Boy” on Hiroshima during World War II. His military career began with enlistment in 1937 and pilot qualification in 1938; he served on anti-submarine missions and in heavy bomber detachments in Europe, where he took part in early operations of American strategic aviation in 1942.
Assigned to contribute to the development of the Boeing B-29, Tibbets was chosen in 1944 to lead the 509th Composite Group, a unit created for operations with nuclear weapons. After the war, he participated in nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll and was involved in the development of jet aircraft and bombing strategies in the postwar era.
In civilian life he worked in executive aviation, joining the founding board of Executive Jet Aviation and serving as its president until 1987. He became widely known and a subject of public debate and media portrayals, remaining a controversial reference regarding the use of nuclear weapons and the legacy of the Pacific campaign.
