Alexandrine of Prussia (Friederike Wilhelmine Alexandrine Marie Helene) was a princess by birth and, through marriage, Grand Duchess consort of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. A daughter of King Frederick William III of Prussia and Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, she belonged to one of the most influential dynasties of nineteenth-century Europe and was sister to figures such as Frederick William IV of Prussia and Emperor William I of Germany. She married on 25 May 1822 to Paul Frederick I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who acceded to the title of Grand Duke in 1837. The marriage, marked by personal differences, is generally described as unhappy: her husband devoted himself chiefly to his military career, while Alexandrine took on a reserved role at court. Known for her culture and erudition, she devoted herself to the education of her children and to cultural pursuits; she attended lectures and was an avid reader, although she was regarded as distant in personal dealings. Among her children, Frederick Francis II—her successor—stands out, along with others who married into European royal houses. Her legacy lies in her dynastic ties and her role as matriarch, which helped strengthen family networks among the German courts of the nineteenth century, leaving a memory as a representative figure of Prussian and Mecklenburg nobility.
