Paul Wegener was a German actor, screenwriter, and director who became a central figure in Expressionist cinema in the early decades of the 20th century. Trained as an actor in Max Reinhardt’s company, he moved early into film, appearing in pioneering works such as the 1913 version of The Student of Prague and adapting the Golem legend in films that became landmarks of German silent cinema, notably Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (1920).
Beyond the Golem cycle, Wegener explored supernatural themes and innovative photographic effects in films like Der Yoghi (1916), and he incorporated elements of mysticism and illusionism throughout his filmography. He also worked internationally, appearing in The Magician (1926) in his sole Hollywood venture, and starred in films across various genres until the transition to sound cinema in 1932.
During the Nazi regime he took part in official productions, although accounts indicate he maintained an anti-Nazi stance personally, supporting resistance groups and protecting those persecuted. After the war he helped rebuild Berlin’s cultural life, returning to the stage in major roles such as Nathan the Wise. His legacy remains tied to aesthetic experimentation and a decisive influence on German Expressionist cinema.
