Paul Samuel Whiteman was an American conductor, bandleader and arranger who dominated the popular instrumental music scene in the 1920s and early 1930s. Leading an orchestra unusually large for the time—sometimes numbering more than 30 musicians—he turned dance recordings into national hits and established a repertoire that ranged from orchestrated jazz to semi‑classical pieces. The press dubbed him the “King of Jazz,” in part thanks to the popularity of recordings such as "Whispering," "Valencia" and "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers." Whiteman played a decisive role in promoting then‑innovative composers and works: he commissioned the premiere of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and incorporated Ferde Grofé’s arrangements into his orchestra’s repertoire. Over his career he wrote thousands of arrangements, produced hundreds of recordings and appeared on radio and television programs, retaining visibility even after his popularity waned in the swing era. His work has provoked debate: critics argued that the orchestrated character of his versions diluted jazz’s spontaneity, while others acknowledge that his band assembled musicians of exceptional technical skill and helped bring elements of jazz to a wide audience. Whatever the assessment, Whiteman’s legacy lies in building a bridge between popular music, jazz and orchestral arranging, and in his influence on generations of performers and composers.
