Pauline Bonaparte (Maria Paola Buonaparte) was a French princess of Corsican origin, widely known for her family ties to Napoleon I and for her prominent presence in early 19th-century European high society. She became noted for her beauty and impulsive personality; her public life was defined more by strategic marriages and personal preferences than by a direct political role. She first married the French officer Victor Leclerc, with whom she had a son, and later married Prince Camillo Borghese, becoming princess and reigning duchess of Guastalla and princess consort of Sulmona and Rossano. While staying in Saint-Domingue with her husband Leclerc, she faced the harsh circumstances of the revolt and yellow fever, which culminated in her husband’s death in 1802. Back in Europe, her relationship with the Roman court was tense: a life of luxury, amorous affairs and the disdain she aroused among local elites drew criticism and disciplinary measures from her brother, who sought to consolidate political alliances in Italy. Pauline’s life reflects the contradictions of an aristocrat who benefited socially from family power; her legacy is primarily the personal and cultural echo of the Napoleonic world — a figure remembered for beauty, vanity and the dramatic episodes of her private life rather than for public or administrative achievements.
