Pauline Oliveros was an American accordionist and composer, recognized as a central figure in the development of postwar electronic and experimental music. She helped found the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s and served as its first director when the center moved to Mills College, a role that established her work as an educator and administrator in avant‑garde spaces.
As a teacher she held posts at institutions including Mills College, UC San Diego, Oberlin Conservatory, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, helping to train generations of experimental musicians. She developed performance practices with her Expanded Instrument System and performed extensive improvisations, often exploring highly reverberant spaces with the Deep Listening Band.
Her chief theoretical and practical contribution was the formulation of the concepts of "deep listening" and "sonic awareness," ideas that articulate focused and global modes of attention to sound and influenced pedagogical, compositional, and performance practices. Author of books and award‑winning pieces, Oliveros left a lasting legacy in contemporary experimental music and in initiatives such as the Deep Listening Institute.
