Pete “La Roca” Sims was an American jazz drummer whose career was prominent from the late 1950s through the 1960s; he later worked as a lawyer. Born and raised in a musical family in Harlem, he studied percussion at New York art schools and came to attention when Max Roach recommended him to Sonny Rollins; he joined Rollins’s trio for the historic session A Night at the Village Vanguard. During the 1960s he recorded and performed with central figures of modern jazz — including Jackie McLean, Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Charles Lloyd — served as house drummer at clubs such as the Jazz Workshop, and led his own groups. He recorded albums such as Basra (Blue Note, 1965) and Turkish Women at the Bath (1967), works that reveal his rhythmic sensitivity and his dialogue with pianists and bassists of the modern scene. With the decline of the acoustic jazz market, he stepped away to study law, becoming an attorney in the early 1970s. In 1973 he won a lawsuit defending his rights over a reissued recording and, beginning in 1979, returned to jazz on a partial basis, releasing Swing Time (Blue Note, 1997). His career is remembered for his contribution as a versatile musician in the American jazz scene and for his unusual path between the arts and law.
