Peter Behrens was a German architect and designer whose work helped usher in modern industrial architecture and design. He rose to prominence in 1909 with his design for the AEG Turbine Hall in Berlin, a landmark project that integrated architecture, typography, products, and corporate identity and established him as a pioneer of industrial and corporate design. Over the following decades he worked in multiple styles — from early Jugendstil to the rational and classical forms of the German Reform, through Brick Expressionism and, in the 1920s, the New Objectivity. Projects such as the Hoechst administrative building and contributions to the Weissenhof estate demonstrate his ability to alternate between monumentality and functional solutions. He was also an influential educator: he led the architecture school at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1922–1936) and employed young designers in his office who went on to become pillars of European modernism, including Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Walter Gropius. His legacy lies both in buildings and objects and in promoting integrated design practices across industry, art, and architecture. Political and professional events of the 1930s involved him in prominent commissions in Germany; he ended his career as a recognized figure on the European architectural scene until his death in 1940.
