Peter Lawrence Buck is an American guitarist, songwriter, and record producer best known as cofounder and lead guitarist of the influential alternative rock band R.E.M. His work with R.E.M. (1980–2011) helped shape a distinctive rock sound of the 1980s and 1990s, characterized by an arpeggiated picking style that uses open strings and bell-like tones, often associated with the Rickenbacker 360. In addition to guitar, Buck played banjo and mandolin on several of the band’s songs, adding instrumental variety to their recordings. Alongside his work in R.E.M., Buck took part in numerous side projects and supergroups — including The Minus 5, Tuatara, The Baseball Project, Filthy Friends and Hindu Love Gods — and appeared as a guest musician on records by artists such as The Replacements, Billy Bragg and The Decemberists. He also led temporary and collaborative lineups that released albums and tracks over the decades. As a producer, Buck worked with bands including Uncle Tupelo, The Fleshtones, The Feelies and The Jayhawks, extending his role beyond performance into production and arrangement. His legacy lies both in his central contributions to the American alternative rock canon and in the wide network of collaborations that influenced indie and alternative scenes in recent decades.
