Peter Andrew Cruddas, Baron Cruddas, is an English banker and businessman best known for founding the online brokerage CMC Markets in 1989 from modest initial capital. The company grew to multibillion-pound valuations, making him a prominent figure in the financial sector and placing him among the wealthiest names in the City of London in the mid-2000s.
Beyond his business activities, Cruddas became notable as a donor and philanthropist: in 2006 he established the Peter Cruddas Foundation to support children from backgrounds similar to his own, served on charitable boards such as the Prince’s Trust, and gave to cultural and hospital institutions, including the Royal Opera House and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
His public career has also involved controversies around political donations. As a major donor to the Conservative Party, he was the subject of reporting and legal actions concerning the nature of political access linked to contributions; subsequent court rulings found aspects of those claims to be contradictory. More recently, his appointment to the House of Lords prompted debate over the nomination process.
