American botanist and environmentalist, Peter H. Raven served as director and later president of the Missouri Botanical Garden, a position he held for four decades and that defined his institutional and scientific career. Trained in biology at UC Berkeley and with a doctorate in botany from UCLA, Raven made key contributions to plant evolution, taxonomy, and biodiversity conservation. He is coauthor of the influential 1964 paper on coevolution between butterflies and plants, a work that helped establish the concept of coevolution, and author of hundreds of scientific and popular publications. Raven also coauthored the well-known textbook Biology of Plants, widely used in botany courses. His public work included vigorous advocacy for species conservation and for funding plant biology research, as well as service on scientific boards and commissions. The Peter Raven Award, created in 2000, recognizes his impact on plant taxonomy and on the dialogue between science and society. His legacy endures in research on the Onagraceae, in conservation policy, and in strengthening the role of botanical institutions.
