Phil Mahre is a former American alpine ski racer noted for his dominance on the World Cup circuit in the early 1980s. Competing from 1976 to 1984, he collected 27 World Cup victories and finished in the top three of the overall standings for six consecutive seasons, winning the overall title in 1981, 1982 and 1983. His results included discipline titles, particularly in combined, slalom and giant slalom. Born and raised in a skiing family in the U.S. northwest, Mahre worked closely with ski manufacturers throughout his career, helping develop competition equipment tailored to his needs. His rivalry with Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark was a central sporting narrative of the era, shaping many battles for the overall titles. At the Olympic Games, Phil won a silver medal in 1980 and the slalom gold in 1984, in a podium that he shared with his twin brother Steve. He retired early at age 26, ending an intense career that left a technical and competitive legacy for American alpine skiing.
