Philip W. Anderson was an American physicist prominent in condensed matter physics, awarded the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physics for theoretical studies of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems. His career included a long period at Bell Labs (1949–1984) and later appointments as a professor at Cambridge and Princeton, where he established significant academic and institutional influence. Anderson formulated central concepts such as Anderson localization, the Anderson Hamiltonian and the theorem that bears his name concerning impurities in superconductors. He also proposed the resonating valence bond (RVB) idea for high-temperature superconductivity and contributed to the understanding of spin glasses, superfluidity in helium-3 and the anomalous thermal properties of disordered materials. Beyond technical results, he was noted for conceptual reflections on scientific emergence—summarized in the essay “More Is Different”—which influenced studies of complex systems. He received the National Medal of Science and participated in scientific initiatives such as the Santa Fe Institute, leaving a lasting legacy in the theory and methodology of condensed matter physics.
