Philippe Djian is a French novelist, short-story writer and screenwriter whose work rose to prominence in the late 20th century and beyond. Trained in journalism and with varied early jobs — from dock worker to proofreader — he established himself as an author known for a direct style and a visible influence from American literature, which he cites as a foundation for his writing.
His public recognition grew with the novel 37°2 le matin (1985), adapted for film the following year; that adaptation boosted sales and popularized his name. Over the course of his career he published works that move between intimate registers and emotionally intense narratives, often written in the first person.
