Pier Luigi Nervi was an Italian civil engineer and architect whose career became known for mastery of reinforced concrete and innovative structural solutions. Graduating in Bologna in 1913, he became an academic reference while teaching engineering at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” from 1946 to 1961. His practice combined technical rigor with formal sensitivity, exploring shells, ribs and prefabrication to achieve lightness and expressiveness in his buildings. Among his best-known works are the Artemio Franchi Stadium (Florence), the Palazzetto dello Sport (Rome), the Pirelli Tower (Milan, in collaboration with Gio Ponti) and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (with Marcel Breuer and Bernard Zehrfuss). He also worked internationally, designing or collaborating on buildings such as the George Washington Bridge Bus Station (New York), the Cathedral of Saint Mary (San Francisco) and the Paul VI Audience Hall (Vatican City). Author of technical and theoretical texts on construction—such as Structures (1958) and Aesthetics and Technology in Building (1966)—Nervi left a lasting legacy in structural engineering and modernist architecture, influencing casting practices, prefabrication and the dialogue between aesthetics and technique.
