Ron Ely was an American actor and novelist, best known for playing Tarzan in the television series of the same name from 1966 to 1969. Educated in Texas, he worked in minor film and TV roles until rising to prominence in the title role, which was characterized by an effort to be more faithful to the adventure novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The production demanded significant physical effort: Ely refused stunt doubles and performed many dangerous scenes himself, resulting in frequent injuries but also recognition for his commitment to the character. The series ran 57 episodes over two seasons and was notable for replacing the traditional companion Jane with an orphaned boy named Jay. After the series ended, Ely continued to appear on popular programs in the 1970s and 1980s and attempted to revive adventure characters in TV pilots. Later he turned to writing, publishing two detective novels featuring the investigator Jake Sands.
