Charlotte Frederica of Prussia was a Prussian princess by birth and crown princess of Saxe-Meiningen by marriage. The daughter of Prince Albert of Prussia and Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, she belonged to the dynastic networks of the Hohenzollerns and the Orange-Nassaus, a connection that made her a valuable marital candidate in nineteenth-century European high nobility negotiations. Raised in a courtly environment after her parents’ divorce, she received a refined musical education, studying with teachers such as Wilhelm Taubert, Theodor Kullak and Julius Stern — a trait that persisted in the family and was passed on to her daughter Marie Elisabeth. In 1850 she married Crown Prince Georg of Saxe-Meiningen; the union is described as affectionate and marked by close ties between the courts of Meiningen and Berlin. The couple alternated between Prussian residences and the ducal court and had four children, among them Bernhard III, who later succeeded as duke. Charlotte died young in 1855 in childbirth, shortly after the death of another child, an episode that curtailed her direct influence on the succession and the court life of the duchy.
