Piero Taruffi was an Italian racing driver from the early 1930s until 1957. He competed in Formula One from 1950 to 1952 and 1954–1956, scoring one victory, one fastest lap and 41 points in eighteen Grands Prix contested.
Taruffi began his career as a motorcycle racer in the early 1930s, and was hired by Ferrari to contest some races in Europe. In 1934 he suffered a serious accident in the Tripoli Grand Prix while driving a Maserati. He continued racing for that team until the late 1930s. At the same Tripoli circuit he scored his first victory as a professional driver in 1938, with a Maserati. He still achieved notable results in 1939, when international competitions were halted due to World War II. He would return to race for Cisitalia in the late 1940s.
In 1950, in an Alfa Romeo, he made his Formula One debut at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, retiring from the race with mechanical problems. In 1952 he won the Swiss Grand Prix in a Ferrari, at the Bremgarten circuit. In 1955 he saw his second victory slip from his grasp at the Monza circuit, finishing second by only seven-tenths of a second behind his Mercedes teammate Juan Manuel Fangio. He retired from the category the following year, at Monza.
