Pierre Bonny was a French police officer whose career ranged from recognition for investigative skill to downfall through corruption and collaboration. In Paris he joined the Sûreté générale and gained prominence in sensitive investigations in the 1920s and 1930s, such as the Seznec case (in which he was later accused of manipulating evidence) and the Stavisky financial scandal, which established him as one of the most effective operators of the judicial police of his time. Despite early successes and a reputation for operational acumen — including infiltration missions and fraud investigations — his career suffered setbacks: in 1935 he was convicted of corruption and served a prison sentence. During the Nazi occupation Bonny joined the so-called Carlingue (the collaborationist police linked to the Gestapo), a role that tied him to repressive practices and crimes committed under Vichy. After the Liberation he was tried for collaboration and war crimes, convicted and executed in December 1944. Public memory mainly retains him as a symbol of betrayal and corrupt policing in service of a collaborationist regime; his figure also inspired literary works that explore the period’s moral ambiguity.
