Pierre Commoy is a photographer and co-author of the artistic duo Pierre et Gilles, a creative and personal partnership that has worked together since the mid-1970s. With Gilles Blanchard, Commoy developed a distinctive aesthetic that combines photography, painting and set design: they photograph models on life-size sets and, after printing on canvas, apply hand painting to produce hybrid images that draw on sacred art, pop culture and visual advertising. The pair’s work frequently engages religious and mythological themes and celebrates identities and celebrities, bringing together friends, artists and public figures in richly colored staged scenes. The duo achieved international recognition through exhibitions, record covers, fashion commissions and music videos, as well as major retrospectives at institutions such as the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the New Museum. Pierre et Gilles have also faced public controversy — a notable case was the exhibition of Vive la France, which sparked debate about representation and censorship in urban posters. Commoy’s legacy is tied to the creation of a contemporary iconography that blurs the boundaries between high art and popular culture and that influenced visual practices in the final decades of the 20th century and the early 21st.
