Pieter Zeeman was a Dutch experimental physicist whose research on the interaction between light and magnetic fields decisively influenced atomic physics. In 1896, while measuring the spectra of light sources placed in magnetic fields, Zeeman observed the broadening and splitting of spectral lines — a phenomenon that became known as the Zeeman effect. That discovery provided experimental confirmation of Hendrik Lorentz’s electromagnetic theory and anticipated key conclusions about the charge and mass of the particles that emit light. Zeeman’s work had an immediate impact: in 1902 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Lorentz for their experimental and theoretical contributions to the phenomenon. The Zeeman effect became a central tool for investigating atomic structure and the properties of electrons long before the full development of electron theory. Over his career Zeeman held professorships in Leiden and Amsterdam, directed the Institute of Physics, and continued research into magneto-optical effects, the propagation of light in moving media and, later, mass spectrometry. His scientific legacy includes not only the discovery that bears his name but also the establishment of experimental methods that paved the way for modern physics.
