Pita Amor (Guadalupe Teresa Amor Schmidtlein) was a poet and a central bohemian figure in Mexico’s twentieth-century cultural life. Known for her intense personality and controversial public life, she also moved through theater, film, and the visual arts as a model for painters such as Diego Rivera and Juan Soriano. Her social activity brought her close to figures like Frida Kahlo, Salvador Novo, and Gabriela Mistral, reinforcing her role as a muse and interlocutor among generations of intellectuals. In her poetry she wrote in the first person about loneliness, emptiness, and God, showing apparent influences from Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Quevedo, and Góngora. She published notable works such as Yo soy mi casa (1946), Décimas a Dios (1953), Sirviéndole a Dios de hoguera (1958), and El Zoológico de Pita Amor (1975), among others, maintaining a steady output into the final decades of the century. Her personal life—marked by scandals, relationships with public figures, and the tragedy of losing her son—fed both her public image and interpretations of her work. After a period of withdrawal, she returned in the 1970s with recitals and appearances that brought her back to the center of Mexican literary debate. Pita Amor left a legacy as a singular, transgressive voice in Hispanic-American poetry.
