Lord Leopold Mountbatten was a member of the British royal family and an Army officer, remembered chiefly for his military career and his place within the complex Victorian dynastic network. Born into the House of Battenberg, he was the son of Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, and had family ties with several European monarchies; his life and titles were affected by the tensions of the First World War and by anti‑German sentiment in the United Kingdom. During the First World War, Leopold served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and advanced to the rank of captain. He was later placed on half‑pay because of health problems contracted on duty and served temporarily as an extra aide‑de‑camp at the War Office. In 1917, amid the change of royal surnames and the renunciation of German titles, he ceased using the style “Prince of Battenberg” and was incorporated into the British peerage as Sir and subsequently as Lord Leopold Mountbatten. His frail health, related in part to the hereditary condition of hemophilia in the family, contributed to a relatively short life; he died in 1922 and was buried within the royal precincts at Windsor and later at Frogmore. Leopold’s legacy is mainly that of a prince‑officer whose life illustrates how the royal family adapted to national pressures and dynastic changes in the post‑war period.
