Willem II van Oranje-Nassau was Prince of Orange and a statesman of the United Provinces from 1647 to 1650. The son of military leader Frederick Henry and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels, he became a dominant figure during a transitional period after the Eighty Years’ War and the peace that recognized Dutch independence. His marriage to Mary Henrietta Stuart, daughter of King Charles I of England, tied him to English dynastic intrigues; from this union was born, posthumously, the future William III of England. Politically, he opposed the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 and sought to expand princely authority, negotiating secretly with France and working to restore his wife’s brother, Charles II, to the English throne. Conflict with the powerful province of Holland and Amsterdam’s regents marked his final years: he resisted demands to reduce the army—the basis of his power—and at times arrested members of the Provincial Assembly and attempted to seize Amsterdam, an operation that failed. He died young of smallpox in 1650, leaving an interrupted leadership and a legacy that would influence Dutch dynastic and military politics in the following decades.
