Mary of Great Britain (1723–1772) was a British princess, daughter of King George II and Queen Caroline of Ansbach. Born in London, she belonged to the Hanoverian dynasty and, through a political alliance, became Countess consort of Hesse‑Cassel when she married Frederick II, heir of Landgrave William VIII. The marriage, arranged as was customary among royal houses, had a dowry approved by the British Parliament and was celebrated by proxy in London, followed by a ceremony in Kassel. The conjugal life was marked by disagreements: contemporary accounts describe the relationship as unhappy and it led to a formal separation in 1754 after Frederick converted to Catholicism. Despite the marital tensions, Mary played a significant family role by forging ties with the Danish court: in 1756 she moved to Denmark to care for the children of her deceased sister, integrated the children into court life and helped arrange later marriages between her own children and Danish princesses. Her legacy lies in linking European royal houses and in her descendants: three of her children reached adulthood and established dynastic lines in Hesse and Denmark. Mary died in Hanau in 1772.
