Princess Muna, born Antoinette Avril Gardiner in Chelmondiston, England (1941), became a prominent member of the Jordanian royal family when she married King Hussein in 1961. After converting to Islam she adopted the name Muna al‑Hussein and kept the title of princess even after the couple divorced in 1972. She is the mother of the current king, Abdullah II, and is known as Princess Muna, the Princess Mother.
Before the marriage, Gardiner had ties to the British military through her family and worked as a secretarial assistant at times that brought her into contact with the king. Her marriage and residence in Jordan placed her within the country’s political and social life during the 1960s and 1970s.
Her most notable legacy is in health care: in 1962 she founded the Princess Muna Nursing School and established the Princess Muna Nursing Scholarship Fund, initiatives that helped train health professionals in Jordan and the Middle East.
Muna remains a public figure in Jordan, recognized for her social role in health education and for her dynastic connection to the current monarchy.
