Princess of Anhalt Alexandra (Alexandra Therese Marie) was a member of the House of Ascania by birth and, through her marriage to Prince Sizzo of Schwarzburg, joined the House of Schwarzburg. A granddaughter of prominent German dynasties—on her parents’ side connected to the dukes of Anhalt and to the houses of Prussia and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen—she maintained close ties with European aristocracy at the end of the nineteenth century. She was the youngest child of Duke Frederick I of Anhalt; her brothers succeeded to the duchy and formed dynastic alliances, including a connection to the British royal family by one brother’s marriage. Rumors of a supposed engagement to Prince Albert Victor of Wales circulated in the late 1880s, although they never met. She married in Dessau on 25 January 1897 to Sizzo, who had been recognized as heir to the principality of Schwarzburg after overcoming barriers of morganatic marriage. The couple lived in Großharthau and experienced the political upheavals of the November Revolution of 1918, which ended the rule of the German principalities. After the death of Günter Victor, Sizzo became head of the house in 1925 but died less than a year later. Alexandra survived her husband by decades and died at the age of 90; she was buried in the von Rein family crypt in Schwetzingen.
