Augusta of Cambridge was a British princess who, upon marrying Frederick William of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1843, became Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A granddaughter of King George III, she belonged to the dynastic network that connected the House of Hanover to the courts of nineteenth-century Europe, maintaining personal and ceremonial ties to the British royal family throughout her life. She spent much of her adult life in Germany but kept close relations with relatives in England, taking part in ceremonies and advising on etiquette and court dress at coronations — experience drawn from her long service at court. Two children were born of her marriage, among them Adolphus Frederick V, who succeeded as Grand Duke. In old age she served as a living witness to a dynastic era: she was the last surviving grandchild of George III and, until shortly before her death, preserved memories and opinions that sometimes caused family tensions. During the First World War her pension was suspended by the British government, though she continued to maintain family correspondence through intermediaries. She died in 1916 in Neustrelitz, leaving a legacy as a bridge between the British and Mecklenburg-Strelitz royal houses and as a representative figure of the nineteenth-century European dynastic connections.
