A Princess of Hesse and by birth a Princess of the Rhine, Maria Anna Wilhelmina Elizabeth Matilda became the second wife of Grand Duke Frederick Francis II of Mecklenburg‑Schwerin in 1864. The daughter of Prince Charles of Hesse and the Rhine and Princess Elizabeth of Prussia, she belonged to the nineteenth‑century European dynastic network, with ties to royal families such as Prussia’s and indirect connections to the British royal household. In her youth she was considered a possible bride for the future King Edward VII, a prospect that divided opinion at the Victorian court. She married in Darmstadt and had a single daughter, Anna Elizabeth Augusta Alexandrina, born in April 1865. Her public life was short: she died a few days after childbirth of puerperal fever and was buried in Schwerin Cathedral. Although her time as Grand Duchess was brief, her marriage and parentage maintained Hesse family representation within the dynastic alliances of Germany and central Europe in the pre‑unification period and within the nineteenth‑century system of royal marriages.
