Pauline of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was the hereditary grand duchess as the wife of Charles Augustus, heir to the principality of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Born into the princely family of Saxe-Weimar, she was the daughter of Prince Hermann and Princess Augusta of Württemberg, part of the 19th-century German dynastic networks that shaped successions and political alliances. She married Charles Augustus in 1873 and had two sons with him: William Ernest, who later succeeded as grand duke, and Bernhard, who died young. After her husband's early death in 1894, Pauline was known as the dowager hereditary grand duchess, retaining her official rank but losing direct influence over the duchy's government. In her later years she spent long periods in Italy and frequently visited the Italian court. Rumors circulated of a possible morganatic marriage to a servant; this was never confirmed officially or recognized by the ruling family and harmed her popularity at court and with subjects. She died suddenly in 1904 of a heart condition while traveling by train between Rome and Florence; her body was taken to Florence. Pauline’s legacy remains tied to her dynastic role and the private tensions that marked the limited public life of the ducal family.
