A princess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach by birth, Karoline Luise (1786–1816) is chiefly known for her 1810 marriage to Grand Duke Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The daughter of Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Luise of Hesse-Darmstadt, she belonged to the German dynastic networks that shaped the Napoleonic era and the Congress of Vienna. As the consort of the sovereign of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Karoline Luise’s role was largely ceremonial; she bore three children, among them Princess Hélène, who later married the Duke of Orléans, and the heir Albert, who died unmarried. Her motherhood and family ties helped produce dynastic alignments of consequence for nineteenth-century Europe. The princess died prematurely at 29 at Ludwigslust Palace, shortly after the birth of her youngest child, Magnus. On her deathbed she asked her husband to consider marrying her cousin Augusta, a request he fulfilled in 1818. Her legacy is tied to the family and succession links among the German royal houses of the period.
