Dona Januária of Brazil (1822–1901) was a Brazilian princess and an infanta of Portugal, the daughter of Emperor Pedro I and Empress Maria Leopoldina. Sister of Pedro II and of Maria II of Portugal, she acquired the nickname “Princess of Independence” for having been born during the independence period. In 1835 she bore the title Princess Imperial of Brazil as presumptive heir during the minority of Emperor Pedro II, and at times political factions considered her a possible regent during regency crises. Her life unfolded between dynastic duties and a strict education, marked by family losses and by intense correspondence with her father after his abdication in 1831. As presumptive heir, her position shaped marriage negotiations and diplomatic alignments: several foreign courts were approached to identify suitable suitors, since any marriage needed to account for Brazilian state interests. Although she never served as regent, Januária played a notable role in the political imagination of the regency period and in securing the monarchical succession, remembered for her dynastic status and for the family ties that connected the royal houses of Brazil, Portugal and Austria.
