Atsuko Ikeda, known in childhood as Princess Yori, is a former member of the Japanese imperial family and the fourth daughter of Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun. The elder sister of Emperor Akihito, she received a traditional elite education — including attendance at Gakushūin — and learned English from an American teacher during the post–Second World War occupation. She graduated from Gakushūin Women’s College shortly before her marriage. In 1952 she married Takamasa Ikeda and, under the 1947 Imperial Household Law, relinquished her imperial title upon becoming a commoner. She moved to Okayama Prefecture, where her husband worked as a cattle breeder and served as president of the local zoo; the couple had no children. Throughout her life she maintained ties with religious and cultural communities associated with Shinto tradition. In 1988 she became saishu (chief priestess) of the Grand Shrine of Ise, a position she held until 2017, when she was succeeded by a younger generation of the imperial family. Her role at that ritual center affirmed her significance in the religious sphere and preserved elements of the relationship between the imperial household and contemporary Shinto institutions.
