Maria of the Netherlands (1841–1910) was a princess by birth and, after marriage, Princess of Wied. The youngest daughter of Prince Frederick of the Netherlands and Princess Louise of Prussia, she belonged to the European courtly circles of the nineteenth century through dynastic ties to both the House of Orange-Nassau and the Prussian nobility.
In 1871 she married William, Prince of Wied, a union that strengthened aristocratic connections and produced a large family, including William, the future Prince of Albania. The marriage reflected common practices of the era: political alliances and a substantial dowry were decisive in the matrimonial negotiations.
Known for her intelligence and composed bearing, Maria lived with hearing impairment from childhood. She did not seek public prominence through political or cultural achievements, but her familial and dynastic role helped sustain kinship networks among European royal houses.
She died in 1910 and is remembered chiefly as a transitional figure between generations of the Dutch royal family: she was the last grandchild of King William I to die, closing a genealogical link of significance to the dynastic history of the Netherlands.
