Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife (1867–1931), was a prominent member of the British royal family as the eldest daughter of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark and the younger sister of King George V. Raised in royal residences such as Marlborough House and Sandringham, she received limited formal education and conformed to the social and dynastic role expected of princesses of her time. In 1889 she married Alexander Duff, then 6th Earl of Fife, who was shortly thereafter created 1st Duke of Fife. The marriage represented an alliance between the royal family and the Scottish titled nobility; the union produced three children, including Alexandra and Maud, who later married into the royal family and the higher nobility. The absence of a male heir led, in 1900, to the creation of a second dukedom with a special remainder allowing succession through the daughters. In 1905 she was granted by her father the title Princess Royal, the highest female honorary distinction in the United Kingdom. Her public life included notable episodes, such as the 1901 shipwreck during a voyage to Egypt, and she served as the matriarch of a line that maintained close ties to the royal household. She was initially buried at Windsor; her remains were later moved to the Mar Lodge Mausoleum in Aberdeenshire.
