Prince of the House of Wittelsbach and Infante of Spain, Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria (1884–1958) served as a link between the Bavarian and Spanish courts. The son of Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria and Infanta María de la Paz, he was naturalized and granted the title of Infante by Alfonso XIII in 1905, becoming part of the Spanish royal family and receiving high honors such as the Order of the Golden Fleece and the grand crosses of Charles III and Isabella the Catholic.
Graduated from the Bavarian War Academy and a cavalry officer, Ferdinand also served in the Spanish Army, taking part in operations in Morocco during the Rif War. In 1906 he married Infanta María Teresa of Spain, with whom he had four children; in 1914 he married again, to María Luisa de Silva, who was likewise granted the title of Infanta.
By renouncing, in 1914, his dynastic rights to the Kingdom of Bavaria, he reaffirmed his commitment to the Spanish monarchy, where he spent most of his life, residing at the Cuesta de la Vega palace in Madrid. His life reflects the dynastic and military ties between two European monarchies and the role of princes and princesses as political and social intermediaries in the early twentieth century.
