A Belgian prince by birth, Alexandre (Alexandre Emmanuel Henri Albert Marie Léopold) was a discreet member of the royal family, known mainly for his private life and philanthropic commitments. The son of King Leopold III and Lilian Baels, he was not in the line of succession, spent part of his childhood displaced during World War II and lived through his family’s temporary exile, returning to Belgium in 1950. From the 1960s onward he maintained a low profile, keeping out of major institutional roles. In 1991 he married Léa Wolman; the marriage was only made public in the late 1990s. The couple had no children but engaged in extensive charitable work, focused mainly on health and social assistance. In 2006 they founded the Fonds d’entraide Prince et Princesse Alexandre de Belgique, which ran annual thematic campaigns — cancer, people with disabilities, hospitalized children and other causes — and organized fundraising events. Alexandre also preserved the memory of the family home Argenteuil, publishing a photo album and supporting foundations linked to Princess Lilian. He died in 2009 of a pulmonary embolism and was buried in the royal crypt of Notre-Dame de Laeken. His public legacy is defined by discreet patronage and sustained support for social and health institutions.
