Prince Ernst Heinrich of Saxony was a member of the House of Wettin and the youngest son of Saxony’s last king, Frederick Augustus III. A soldier in World War I, he served on several fronts, received the Military Order of St. Henry, and commanded infantry and artillery units; after the conflict he supervised the return of Saxon troops and learned to manage rural estates in Silesia. In the following decades he took on the administrative leadership of the Albertine line association of the Wettins, negotiating with the Free State of Saxony agreements on the use of the family’s properties and collections. A conservative public figure, he kept his distance from Nazism — rejecting its ideology, not participating in the Beer Hall Putsch and briefly detained during the Night of the Long Knives — yet he maintained pragmatic relations with regime officials for reasons related to property interests. A collector and lover of the arts, he hosted the artist Käthe Kollwitz at Moritzburg and made cultural trips to Egypt. After the war he lost most of the family’s assets, some of which were only partially recovered decades later. He married Princess Sophie of Luxembourg in 1921 (three children) and, in 1947, Virginia Dulon; he spent his final years exiled from Saxony and died in 1971.
