Prince of Wales as the only son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou, Edward of Westminster became a central figure in the final phases of the Wars of the Roses. Invested as Prince of Wales in 1454, his childhood and youth were marked by dynastic struggles between Lancastrians and Yorkists, the king’s mental health crises, and rumors about the legitimacy of his paternity, though no evidence confirms them. During the 1460s he accompanied the queen mother on campaigns, exiles, and attempts to restore the House of Lancaster to the throne, even maintaining a court in France and marrying Anne Neville in 1470. The alliance with the Earl of Warwick enabled the brief restoration of Henry VI, but the advance of Edward IV reversed the situation. At the Battle of Tewkesbury (1471) the young prince was defeated and killed; accounts of the circumstances of his death vary between contemporary sources and later narratives, but sources close to the event agree that he died in combat. He was buried at Tewkesbury Abbey. His short life and death symbolize the intensity and dynastic cost of England’s fifteenth-century civil wars.
