George William Ernest Augustus Frederick Axel, Prince of Hanover and Duke of Brunswick‑Lüneburg (1915–2006), was a member of one of the oldest German dynasties and was related by marriage to several European royal houses. A grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II and connected to the Greek royal family through marriage, he belonged to dynastic networks that spanned the 20th century, maintaining ties among European nobility during a period of major political change. Educated at Schule Schloss Salem, the prestigious boarding school co‑founded by Max von Baden and Kurt Hahn, George William held administrative and pedagogical roles: he served as the school’s head from 1948 to 1959, helping to rebuild and sustain the institution in the postwar years. His training and activities reflect a focus on education and public service within the aristocratic milieu. He also served on the International Olympic Committee and the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund, distinguishing himself through involvement in the German sports movement. He married Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark in 1946, with whom he had three children, preserving the succession and presence of the House of Hanover in contemporary Europe. His legacy combines the preservation of dynastic traditions, educational leadership, and participation in sports associations, illustrating the adaptive role of European nobility in the 20th century.
