Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt was a military officer and field marshal in the service of the Habsburgs, whose career was prominent on the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries. The son of a German princely house, he chose a military career and took part in campaigns against the Turks and in the Irish campaign, later joining the Austrian army where he rose rapidly to major general and cavalry general. Renowned for his command in Catalonia, George led troops in the defense of Barcelona (1697), received the Order of the Golden Fleece and served as viceroy of Catalonia from 1698 to 1701, instituting reforms that won him local popularity. With the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession, he sided with Archduke Charles and headed the Austrian forces in Spain. In 1704 he commanded the expedition that captured and held Gibraltar, and in 1705 he led the offensive against Barcelona, where he died during the assault on the citadel of Montjuïc. His local burial and the symbolic preservation of his heart in Darmstadt attest to the historical recognition he received; in Catalonia he is remembered as Príncep Jordi, with a place name in Barcelona.
