Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Wilhelm (Wilhelm August Karl Joseph Ferdinand Benedikt) held his title from 1905 until his death in 1927, a period marked by profound political change in Germany. The eldest son of Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Infanta Antónia of Portugal, Wilhelm belonged to a dynastic network linking Europe's royal houses — he was the brother of the future Ferdinand I of Romania and a cousin of monarchs such as Carlos I of Portugal and Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. His first marriage, in 1889, to Princess Maria Theresa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies produced three children, among them Augusta Victoria, who later married the last king of Portugal, and two princes who continued the line. Widowed in 1909, he married again in 1915 to Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria; that marriage produced no issue. With the collapse of the German Empire in 1918, political recognition of his title was abolished, although he retained its honorary use until the end of his life. His career reflects the presence and interconnection of European royal houses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the institutional changes that curtailed the political role of the nobility.
