Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist, writer, and environmentalist whose work helped launch modern environmental awareness. After years with the federal fisheries service, she established herself as an author with books about the ocean — including The Sea Around Us, which won the National Book Award — books that brought her public recognition and financial security. At the turn of the 1950s to 1960s, Carson turned her attention to the environmental impacts of synthetic pesticides. Her research culminated in Silent Spring (1962), a book that exposed the ecological and human-health effects of indiscriminate pesticide use and provoked a strong reaction from the chemical industry. Silent Spring mobilized public opinion and influenced changes in U.S. pesticide policy, contributing to the ban on DDT and to the creation of environmental regulatory bodies. Carson’s legacy includes popularizing ecology, shaping environmental public policy, and underscoring the importance of scientific responsibility in managing natural resources.
