Raoul Dufy was a French visual artist whose work encompassed painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, ceramics, decoration, and textile and furniture design. Trained in Le Havre and Paris, he began in Impressionism and, influenced by meetings with Monet, Pissarro and above all Henri Matisse, moved into Fauvism, later developing interests that touched on Cubism and a personal signature distinguished by color and lightness. Throughout the twentieth century Dufy produced easel paintings as well as applied projects: he designed prints for haute couture and the textile industry, collaborated with designer Paul Poiret and created pieces for tapestry and theatrical set design. His editorial work included book illustrations and graphic projects that extended his public reach beyond the salons and exhibitions. Known for luminous compositions and his versatility between decorative arts and fine arts, Dufy established an international reputation. In his later years he suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, which affected his practice; he died in 1953. His legacy endures in his influence on surface design and in the integration of art and the textile industry in the interwar period.
