Ray McKinley was an American drummer, singer, and big band leader active mainly from the 1930s through the 1960s. He began on the regional Texas scene and reached national prominence as a member of the Dorsey brothers' orchestras and, later, as co-leader of Will Bradley's band, where he enjoyed vocal and songwriting success, most notably with "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar."
After a brief stint leading his own group and recording for Capitol, McKinley gained distinction during World War II when, together with Jerry Gray, he took over direction of the Major Glenn Miller Army Air Forces Orchestra following Glenn Miller's disappearance. In the postwar years he formed a modern big band with arrangements by Eddie Sauter, attempting to refresh the large-orchestra repertoire in a changing market.
In the 1950s and 1960s he also worked in radio and television, and in 1956 was chosen to lead the Glenn Miller revival orchestra, a post he held until 1966 that strengthened his association with the swing legacy. In addition to performing, he wrote lyrics and songs recorded by contemporary artists and maintained an occasional recording presence into the 1970s.
