Raymond Queneau was a French writer and poet whose work moved between linguistic invention, formal experimentation and critical humor. Trained in philosophy with a period of study at the Sorbonne, he also worked as a reader and secretary at the publisher Gallimard and collaborated on wide-reaching editorial projects, placing him at the heart of the French literary avant-garde of the twentieth century. The author of novels, plays, poems and essays, Queneau gained wide recognition with Exercises in Style, a work that demonstrates his inquiry into register variation by retelling the same anecdote in ninety-nine different versions, and with Zazie in the Metro, a text that innovated by incorporating colloquial speech into fiction and inspired Louis Malle’s film adaptation, an event close to the Nouvelle Vague. He also published Cent Mille Milliards de Poèmes, a combinatorial experiment in poetry. A politically engaged intellectual with a critical stance, he had ambivalent relationships with Surrealism and Communism, taking part in cultural debates and literary collectives; he joined institutions such as the Académie Goncourt and served as a juror at the Cannes Film Festival. His legacy endures in his influence on literary linguistics, stylistic experimentation and the renewal of written French in the postwar period.
