Régis Debray is a French philosopher, journalist, writer and professor whose work moved between political activism and theoretical reflection. In the 1960s he drew close to revolutionary figures such as Che Guevara, accompanying guerrilla experiences in Latin America — during which he was arrested in Bolivia in 1967 — and became known for works that influenced leftist movements. His first major publication, Revolution in the Revolution, drew wide attention among young activists. Over the decades, Debray established himself as a public intellectual in France: he joined the Socialist Party before distancing himself over ideological differences, headed the European Institute of Religious Sciences and took part in the commission that produced legislation on secularism in education. He teaches philosophy and is recognized for his role in debates on culture, politics and religion. He is above all the creator of médiologie (or mediology), a discipline that analyzes the transmission of cultural meanings by technical and institutional means. His books — among them Cours de médiologie générale, Vie et mort de l’image and Transmitting Culture — developed a multidisciplinary approach to images, media and power. As an essayist he combined cultural critique with political analysis, criticizing contemporary trends in communication and advocating reflection on memory, secularism and civic education. His legacy endures in his influence on media studies and his continued presence in French public debate.
