Robert I, known as Robert the Bruce, was King of the Scots from 1306 to 1329 and a central figure in restoring Scotland’s independence during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. Born into a family with strong noble ties—as heir to the Earldom of Carrick and the Lordship of Annandale—he secured not only a dynastic claim but also a territorial base that enabled him to lead decisive military and political campaigns. After becoming involved in the contest for the throne and in the killing of John Comyn, Robert proclaimed himself king and, despite initial defeats, reorganized Scottish resistance. His victory at Bannockburn (1314) over a numerically superior English force became the decisive moment that consolidated the kingdom’s restoration and established him as a national hero. Politically, he sought international legitimacy: the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) and subsequent papal recognition strengthened his position, and the Treaty of Edinburgh–Northampton (1328) brought formal peace with England. His legacy includes the affirmation of Scottish sovereignty and a lasting presence in the country’s literature and political tradition.
